EBELa - Eyes and Brain: Early markers of Language Development
O projecto EBELa estuda sinais precoces do desenvolvimento da linguagem, no sentido de identificar eventuais riscos de perturbações da linguagem, como as Perturbações do Espectro do Autismo e Perturbações Especificas da Linguagem, e assim permitir um acompanhamento e intervenção adequados o mais cedo possível.
Assumimos o desafio de realizar um estudo prospectivo amplo com o objectivo de identificar marcadores precoces de desenvolvimento da linguagem na aquisição do Português Europeu. Os marcadores precoces permitem prever o desenvolvimento linguístico posterior, quer no caso do desenvolvimento normal, quer no caso de perturbações no desenvolvimento. O estudo centra-se em dois grupos de bebés, entre os 5 e os 30 meses: bebés sem risco conhecido para perturbações do Espectro do Autismo e Perturbações Específicas da Linguagem e bebés de risco (segundo vários factores, como risco genético, sexo, tempo de gestação e peso).
As tarefas do estudo são inofensivas e completamente seguras para os bebés, consistindo no registo do movimento dos olhos dos bebés, ou da sua actividade cerebral (EEG), durante a audição de sons e visualização de imagens, a par do preenchimento de questionários sobre o desenvolvimento dos bebés.
Este projecto combina, assim, investigação fundamental e investigação aplicada: contribui para o conhecimento de como a língua é adquirida e visa possibilitar a promoção de métodos mais eficazes de prevenção, diagnóstico e intervenção precoce em caso de risco de desenvolvimento de perturbações da linguagem, com claros benefícios para o indivíduo, a família e a sociedade.
